    Halloween   

Początkowo święto to nazywało się All Hallows’ Eve, co tłumaczymy jako wigilia przed Dniem Wszystkich Świętych. Potem skrócono to do Hallowe’en, a dziś mówimy po prostu Halloween. Słówko „hallow" dawniej oznaczało „święty", dziś używa się w tym znaczeniu słowa „saint". Dlatego obecnie na Dzień Wszystkich Świętych mówimy All Saints' Day.

Halloween is celebrated on 31 October. On Halloween children dress up as ghosts, vampires and other scary creatures. They go from door to door and say ―Trick or treat to get some sweets. Many people go to fancy dress parties and play special games like bobbing for apples and telling ghost stories. One of the Halloween symbols is jack-o’-lantern – an empty pumpkin with a scary face and a candle inside. This tradition comes from Ireland. A long time ago Irish travellers used turnips to make lanterns. They believed those lanterns would protect them them from evil ghosts. Now people celebrate Halloween with pumpkins instead of turnips.
